NATO leader to attend Erdogan’s inauguration in Turkey

Date:

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is set to visit Turkey over the weekend to attend the inauguration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and hold discussions with him. The visit comes amid increasing pressure on Erdogan to drop his opposition to Sweden joining NATO. Stoltenberg has stated that he will work towards Sweden joining the alliance “as early as possible” after speaking with Erdogan earlier this week. The NATO statement confirmed that Stoltenberg would attend Erdogan’s inauguration on Saturday and would hold bilateral meetings with the Turkish president and senior officials on Sunday. Turkey has been slow to admit Sweden to the military alliance, with Hungary being the only other member country yet to ratify Sweden’s membership bid. Stoltenberg has said that Sweden joining before the NATO summit in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius on July 11-12 is “absolutely possible.”
