UAE donates $5M to UN OCHA for Sudan humanitarian efforts

Date:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Sudan by allocating $5 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF). This fund, managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), aims to address critical humanitarian needs and emergencies on the ground in Sudan.

In a statement, Martin Griffiths, Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, expressed gratitude to the UAE for its generous support. He highlighted the importance of this allocation in providing lifesaving assistance to families and communities affected by Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.

Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the country’s long-term commitment to supporting Sudan and promoting stability in the region. She underscored the UAE’s partnership with OCHA and other UN agencies to deliver vital aid to those most impacted by the crisis.

In addition to the contribution to the SHF, Emirati officials also signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and prevent the risk of famine. The UAE has allocated $5 million to support FAO’s project, ‘Mitigating Famine in Sudan – Support to Conflict-Affected Vulnerable Smallholder Farming and Pastoralist Households.’

This FAO project, running for one year, aims to provide emergency crop, livestock, and veterinary assistance to 275,000 vulnerable smallholder farmer and pastoralist households, benefiting approximately 1,375,000 individuals. The UAE’s contributions to OCHA and FAO are part of a broader commitment of $70 million dedicated to addressing urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan through UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.

The UAE’s support for Sudan is not new. In April, the country pledged $100 million at a global humanitarian conference for Sudan and its neighboring countries. With this recent allocation, the total amount of UAE aid to Sudan over the past decade exceeds $3.5 billion.

The UAE’s contributions play a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of vulnerable populations in Sudan and supporting efforts to build a more stable and prosperous future for the country. By partnering with international organizations like OCHA and FAO, the UAE is able to maximize the impact of its humanitarian assistance and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need.

As the humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to unfold, the UAE’s ongoing support serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by conflict and instability. Through strategic partnerships and targeted funding, the UAE is helping to address immediate needs while also laying the groundwork for long-term recovery and resilience in Sudan.
