Macron finalizes $100bn climate finance accord with leaders in France

PARIS: Wealthy nations finalized an overdue climate finance pledge to developing countries worth $100 billion on Friday and created a fund for biodiversity and the protection of forests, France’s president said, according to Reuters. Emmanuel Macron was speaking at a final panel of a summit in Paris where some 40 leaders, including two dozen from Africa, China’s prime minister and Brazil’s president had gathered to give impetus to a new global finance agenda.

China announces $72 billion tax incentive for electric vehicles

RIYADH: China unveiled on Wednesday a 520 billion yuan ($72.3 billion) package of tax breaks over four years for electric vehicles and other green cars, as it seeks to boost auto sales. Weakening sales growth in the world’s biggest auto market has raised concern over China’s economic growth and while financial support was widely expected after an earlier government pledge to promote the industry, shares in major automakers jumped after the details were released.

Encouragement for US Businesses to Invest More in Iraq

LONDON: American businesses are being encouraged to increase investment in Iraq as the country looks to move on from decades of devastation. Speaking to journalists, including Arab News, on Tuesday following a trip to Iraq, the special representative for commercial and business affairs at the US State Department said he is “very excited” at the opportunities to be part of the rebuilding of the country.

Latvia prioritizes Saudi Arabia as a key market, confirms minister for economics

RIYADH: Latvia is eager to strengthen trade ties with Saudi Arabia, allowing Latvian companies to contribute to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 social reform and economic diversification agenda, Ilze Indriksone, Latvia’s minister for economics, has told Arab News. Speaking after the conclusion of the Saudi-Latvian Business Forum in Riyadh earlier this month, Indriksone emphasized the need to expand economic cooperation, boost bilateral trade, and increase investment in research, development and technology. 

Saudi start-up wins Visa award for digital finance

RIYADH: A Riyadh start-up has won top prize in a Visa-sponsored competition that seeks to improve digital shopping. Amwal Tech, which was set up last year, came top in the Saudi heat of the Visa Everywhere Initiative, taking a SR150,000 ($40,000) prize for its all-in-one encrypted transaction and identity app that processes payments quickly and safely. Lamaa, a Saudi financial tech firm, was runner-up with prize money of SR100,000, and also won a separate “social impact award” with a SR50,000 prize. Monak, a “digital lifestyle” company, came third and won SR50,000.

Bank of China to launch in Riyadh in 2021, confirms official

RIYADH: In yet another sign of increasing cooperation between the world’s second-largest economy and the Arab world, the Bank of China is set to open its first branch in Riyadh later in 2023, reported Asharq. It quoted Jun Tian, head of the team for the launch, as saying that the bank’s branch in the Saudi capital is expected to begin operations by the end of October or at the beginning of November.

Saudi Arabia’s NDMC Concludes $667m Sukuk Issuance in June

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s National Debt Management Center announced the closure of the riyal-denominated sukuk program issuance for June with the total bid amount received at SR2.5 billion ($667 million).    The total amount allocated was SR7.43 billion with the sukuk issuance divided into tranches — the first has a size of SR622 million maturing in 2030. The second tranche was valued at SR1.84 billion million maturing in 2035, the NDMC said in a statement   Also called an Islamic bond, sukuk is a debt product issued according to Shariah or Islamic laws.
