Apple is reportedly preparing to release a new MacBook Air with an M3 chip, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. The new MacBook Air is expected to be launched between late spring and summer. In addition to the 15-inch model, Apple is also said to be unveiling an improved 13-inch MacBook Air. However, it is unclear what kind of processor will power the computers.
Earlier rumors suggested that the 15-inch model may include an M2 chip with an M2 Pro option. However, since the MacBook Air already has an M2 chip, there wouldn’t be much else to update outside the Wi-Fi chip (6 to 6E) and Bluetooth (5.0 to 5.3). The timing will be further complicated by the announcement of an M3 iMac by Apple in the second part of this year, according to Gurman.
The two new MacBooks will be released by Apple using an M3 processor, according to 9to5Mac sources after Gurman’s revelation. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants confirmed that the April delivery date is still on track. If Apple introduces the M3 13-inch MacBook Air this spring, the M2 13-inch MacBook Air would have been available for less than a year.
The next-generation M3 processor would also have just been released, so “if those devices launch in a few months with the M2 chip, they’ll swiftly become antiquated,” Gurman noted. “A new M2 13-inch MacBook Air is unlikely to be enticing, but a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 CPU may still thrill consumers.” The 3nm fabrication method will be used for the M3, which will be Apple’s first semiconductor.
Compared to the 5nm and improved 5m processes used with earlier chips, it will feature more transistors, better performance, and lower power consumption. According to Gurman, despite supply issues brought on by the pandemic that hampered production, Apple wants to switch the M-series processors to an annual cycle like the A-series chips in the iPhone.
