Israeli Real Estate Firm’s Genocidal Rhetoric Lands Them in Trade Fair

Yad2 Real Estate Fair in Tel Aviv Showcases Controversial Israeli Firms

Yad2, the largest classifieds site in Israel and a subsidiary of German publishing giant Axel Springer, is currently hosting a real estate fair in Tel Aviv this weekend. The event, which began on Friday, is featuring Israeli real estate firms that offer listings within Israel’s borders as well as those that operate in Jewish-only settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

Prominent Israeli real estate firms marketing properties in the West Bank include Tanya Israel, which is currently promoting 32 housing units in Efrat; Ram Aderet, advertising a construction project in Ariel; and Oron, showcasing an “expansion project” of 40 villas in Eshkolot. Additionally, Harey Zahav, a controversial firm that has been at the center of international controversies related to Israel’s actions in Gaza, is also participating in the fair.

Critics have accused Harey Zahav of promoting genocidal sentiments through its marketing strategies. The company faced backlash for sharing an image on Instagram featuring a tank alongside a quote from the Book of Deuteronomy that is interpreted as calling for the genocide of the pre-Israelite inhabitants of the Holy Land. Furthermore, Harey Zahav sparked international outrage for publishing ads that depicted transparent housing units in Gaza and listed “presale prices” on lots in Gaza.

Despite condemnation of these controversial ads, Harey Zahav’s CEO defended them as a form of satire. Dror Etkes, an expert on settlements, highlighted the concerning acceptance of radical politics within Israeli society, pointing to Yad2’s decision to host firms like Harey Zahav as an example.

Axel Springer, the parent company of Yad2, has been reported to profit from home sales and rentals in Jewish-only West Bank settlements through the classified site. While Axel Springer maintains that Yad2 operates in accordance with Israeli law and prohibits discrimination, concerns remain about the platform’s listings in settlements and outposts unauthorized even by Israeli legal standards.

The political empowerment of Israel’s far-right and settler movement has been underscored by recent events, including Hamas attacks and the blocking of aid convoys into Gaza. High-ranking Israeli officials have openly expressed ambitions for increased Israeli control and civilian presence in Gaza, reflecting a shift towards more right-wing policies.

In conclusion, the Yad2 real estate fair in Tel Aviv has brought attention to the controversial practices of Israeli real estate firms operating in the West Bank. The involvement of companies like Harey Zahav has raised concerns about the promotion of radical ideologies and the political climate within Israel. As debates continue over the ethics of conducting business in disputed territories, the real estate industry remains a focal point for discussions on human rights and international law.
