Iranian Police Arrest Three Suspected Daesh Members Planning Attacks

Iranian police have recently made a significant breakthrough in their fight against terrorism by arresting three suspected members of the Daesh group who were planning attacks at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The arrests took place in the city of Karaj in the northwestern province of Alborz and included Mohammed Zaker, who was identified as a senior member of the group.

According to the official IRNA news agency, the police in Alborz province acted swiftly to apprehend the individuals who were plotting a suicide attack during the end of Ramadan celebrations. While it is not clear when exactly the arrests took place or whether any foreign nationals were involved, this operation demonstrates the Iranian authorities’ commitment to combating terrorism within their borders.

In addition to the three main suspects, eight other accomplices were also arrested, although details about their involvement were not provided by IRNA. This crackdown on Daesh operatives comes on the heels of another arrest in the holy city of Qom, where two alleged members of the group were detained earlier in the week.

The threat of terrorism is not new to Iran, as evidenced by a deadly attack in January claimed by Daesh. The twin bombings in the southern city of Kerman resulted in the tragic deaths of over 90 people during a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of Qasem Soleimani’s death. Soleimani, a top Revolutionary Guards general, was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020, sparking outrage and retaliation from Iran.

Iran has been engaged in a long-standing battle against various jihadist and militant groups operating within its borders. Just last week, state media reported that 10 Iranian security personnel and 18 members of a jihadist group were killed in attacks near the border with Pakistan. The assaults were attributed to Jaish Al-Adl, a Sunni Muslim rebel group that has been designated as a terrorist organization by both Iran and the United States.

The recent arrests of Daesh members and their accomplices underscore the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the region. Iran’s security forces remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to prevent further attacks and protect their citizens from harm. By disrupting terrorist plots and apprehending those responsible, they send a clear message that terrorism will not be tolerated within Iran’s borders.

As the country continues to face security challenges from various militant groups, including Daesh and Jaish Al-Adl, cooperation with international partners and robust counterterrorism measures will be crucial in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The recent arrests serve as a reminder of the constant threat posed by terrorism and the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of such dangers.
