Israel Vows to Finish Job in Gaza, War Cabinet Member Threatens Ramadan Deadline for Rafah

Date:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Vows to Continue Gaza Offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that he has no intention of halting the military offensive in Gaza, stating that he is determined to “finish the job.” The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has escalated, with a member of Netanyahu’s War Cabinet threatening to invade the southern city of Rafah if remaining Israeli hostages are not freed by the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with more than half of the enclave’s 2.3 million Palestinians seeking refuge in Rafah. While there has been no public discussion of a timeline for a ground offensive on Rafah, retired general Benny Gantz, a member of Netanyahu’s War Cabinet, has warned that if the hostages are not released by Ramadan, the fighting will escalate to the Rafah area.

Ceasefire negotiations have struggled to make progress, with Netanyahu dismissing Hamas’ demands as “delusional.” The United States, Israel’s top ally, continues to hope for a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement, aiming for a broader resolution to the conflict that was sparked by Hamas’ attack in southern Israel.

Netanyahu’s stance on Palestinian statehood has been a point of contention, with the US advocating for a two-state solution as part of a broader normalization of relations between Israel and regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia. However, Netanyahu’s government has rejected international calls for a permanent arrangement with the Palestinians and opposes any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The international community overwhelmingly supports an independent Palestinian state as part of a future peace agreement. Still, Netanyahu’s government, filled with hard-liners who oppose Palestinian independence, is focused on achieving what he calls “total victory” over Hamas.

As concerns grow over a potential offensive in Rafah, Netanyahu has assured that Palestinian civilians will be evacuated. However, the logistics of where these civilians will go in the largely devastated Gaza Strip remain unclear.

The offensive timing coincides with reports from the World Health Organization that southern Gaza’s main medical center, Nasser Hospital, is no longer functional after being raided by Israeli forces. Israeli strikes across Gaza have resulted in numerous casualties, with medics and witnesses reporting at least 18 people killed overnight into Sunday.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with thousands of Palestinians killed and many more displaced. The war has taken a toll on the civilian population, with reports of widespread destruction and a growing humanitarian crisis.

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, there are fears that the violence could spread to other parts of the region. The US Central Command conducted self-defense strikes in Yemen against cruise missiles and drones controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages have faced challenges, with Hamas insisting on an end to the war and the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. The US, Qatar, and Egypt have been involved in negotiations, but progress has been slow.

As the conflict in Gaza rages on, the international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access to the region. However, with no end in sight to the violence, the situation remains precarious for the people of Gaza.
