Gaza Dentist Works in Tent Amid War | TOME

Date:

The resilience and dedication of healthcare workers in conflict zones are often overlooked, but their commitment to providing care in the most challenging circumstances is truly remarkable. One such example is dentist Najdat Saqer, who has set up a makeshift clinic in Gaza amidst the ongoing war.

Saqer, a 32-year-old dentist, was forced to abandon his original surgery in Nuseirat in central Gaza after it was targeted several times by Israeli strikes, causing severe damage. Undeterred by the destruction, Saqer decided to retrieve what he could from his clinic to continue providing dental care to those in need. With most dentists either leaving the area or their clinics being damaged, Saqer saw an opportunity to make a difference.

Setting up a tent clinic, Saqer brought back his dentist’s chair and other equipment, transporting them in a rickshaw to his new location. Despite the sounds of war outside his makeshift clinic, Saqer remains focused on his patients, providing much-needed dental care even in the midst of chaos.

The challenges Saqer faces are immense, with a lack of electricity, water, and essential dental equipment making his job even more difficult. The United Nations has warned that Gaza’s health system is on the brink of collapse, with hospitals struggling to function and thousands of patients in need of emergency care.

With only 10 hospitals minimally functional across Gaza, the situation is dire. The World Health Organization has called for the evacuation of 9,000 patients in urgent need of medical treatment, highlighting the urgent need for support and resources to prevent further loss of life.

The toll of the ongoing conflict is devastating, with thousands of lives lost and countless others displaced or injured. The war, which began with Hamas’s attack in October, has resulted in a staggering number of casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

Despite the challenges and dangers he faces, Saqer remains committed to his work, providing essential dental care to those who have nowhere else to turn. His dedication and resilience serve as a beacon of hope in a region plagued by conflict and suffering.

As the world watches the situation in Gaza unfold, it is essential to remember the unsung heroes like Najdat Saqer, who continue to provide care and comfort to those in need against all odds. Their selfless actions remind us of the power of compassion and humanity in the face of adversity.

In times of crisis, it is often the acts of kindness and courage from individuals like Saqer that shine brightest, offering hope and healing to those who need it most. As we reflect on the challenges facing Gaza and its people, let us not forget the everyday heroes who are making a difference one patient at a time.
