WHO plans more Gaza hospital evacuations as bodies buried on site

Date:

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen as aid agencies work tirelessly to evacuate patients stranded in Nasser hospital. The hospital, which is crucial to Gaza’s health services, has been facing a dire situation with no power or oxygen, leading to the deaths of 13 patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners have been conducting evacuations from the hospital, transferring a total of 51 patients so far. However, the situation remains challenging and high-risk as Israeli forces have been preventing movement to and from the hospital.

Despite Israeli forces withdrawing from the hospital at one point, they later stormed it again, further complicating the evacuation efforts. The number of patients in need of evacuation has been fluctuating, with some leaving to escape the fighting and others succumbing to their wounds.

The lack of essential supplies such as food, water, and medical supplies at the hospital has exacerbated the crisis. The ground floors are flooded with sewage water, making conditions even more unbearable for the patients and medical staff.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began four-and-a-half months ago, has left only a few hospitals functioning at a minimal level. The population of 2.3 million people in Gaza is facing acute hunger and the spread of disease, creating a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions.

Most residents in Gaza have been displaced and are crowded into the southern part of the strip near the border with Egypt. The dire situation has prompted aid officials to describe the crisis as unprecedented, with urgent action needed to prevent further suffering.

Israel has accused Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, of using hospitals for cover, while Hamas denies these allegations and accuses Israel of using them as a pretext to destroy the healthcare system. The ongoing conflict and political tensions have only added to the challenges faced by the people of Gaza.

As aid agencies continue their efforts to evacuate patients from Nasser hospital and provide much-needed assistance to the people of Gaza, it is crucial for the international community to step up and support these efforts. The lives of innocent civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, are at stake, and immediate action is needed to alleviate their suffering and ensure access to essential healthcare services.

The situation in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on civilian populations and the urgent need for peace and stability in the region. As the world watches the events unfolding in Gaza, it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize the well-being and safety of civilians above all else.
