Expert calls for implementation of report’s blueprint to address discrimination in English cricket

LONDON: Those in charge of cricket in England must implement guidelines laid out in a damning report into discrimination in the sport released this week if they are to properly tackle a lack of diversity, a leading sports lawyer has said. The England and Wales Cricket Board apologized “unreservedly” on Tuesday after the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket released its evidence of racism, misogyny, and elitism being entrenched in the sport.

Crude Oil Updates: Monthly Gain Expected as Supply Tightens

HOUSTON: Oil prices edged higher on Friday with Brent poised for its first monthly gain this year, as a big drawdown in US oil stocks outweighed concerns that fuel demand will be dented further by more interest rate hikes, according to Reuters. Brent crude futures for September delivery rose 16 cents or 0.2 percent to stand at $74.67 as of 7:05 a.m. Saudi time. The less-traded front month contract, which expires on Friday, was up 30 cents at $74.64. US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 8 cents or 0.1 percent to $69.95.

Writing on Twitter, Mehmet Simsek said the bank’s net international reserves rose to a record $8.5 billion last week. “The return to rational policies will continue gradually,” the minister wrote, adding: “We are accelerating our efforts to obtain additional foreign resources to our country in order to further strengthen the reserves.”

Smith dominates 200m backstroke, Weinstein stuns Ledecky in 200 freestyle

LOS ANGELES: Regan Smith, shaping up for a World Championships showdown with Australian Kaylee McKeown, clocked a blistering 2min 03.80sec to win the 200m backstroke at the US swimming championships on Wednesday. Smith, whose previous world record was broken by McKeown in March with a time of 2:03.14, showed again that her move to train with coach Bob Bowman — former mentor of Michael Phelps — — was paying off.

China’s industrial profits decline, worsening economic gloom

BEIJING: Annual profits at China’s industrial firms extended a double-digit decline in the first five months as softening demand squeezed margins, reinforcing hopes of more policy support to bolster a stuttering post-COVID economic recovery.  The 18.8 percent year-on-year slump in profits came on top of the 20.6 percent contraction in January-April, and added to evidence of an economy that was losing steam on many fronts in May including retail sales, exports and property investment as the youth jobless rate scaled a fresh high of 20.8 percent.
