SPRINGFIELD, N.J.: After stunning women’s golf by winning in her first event as professional, Rose Zhang will try to take the next big step when she goes for her first major victory in the Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol. And it’s been just a month in the making for the 20-year-old Californian, who many believed was going to be the next big celebrity in her sport, similar to when Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa returned in a two-year span ending in 2010.

Mayar Sherif: Highest-Ranked Egyptian in Tennis History by Design

In a recent conversation with her psychologist, Egyptian tennis star Mayar Sherif was asked what was driving her the most. “She was asking me, ‘What is your motivation right now? Because motivation can move mountains’,” recalled Sherif in an interview with Arab News on Monday. “I told her, ‘I’m dying to pass Ismail’s career-high mark of 34,’ so that was definitely a goal I had in my mind.” Sherif was referring to Ismail El-Shafei, who, until Sunday, was the highest-ranked Egyptian in Open era history, having peaked at No.34 in the world back in 1975.

“Boulter Claims First WTA Title in Battle of the Brits Win”

NOTTINGHAM: Katie Boulter won her first WTA Tour title on Sunday, beating Jodie Burrage 6-3 6-3 in the Nottingham Open in the first all-British final at this level for 46 years. Boulter cemented her position as British No. 1 and will move to a career high inside the world’s top 80. “I’m definitely going to be sleeping with this trophy tonight,” said Boulter, who grew up in nearby Leicester.

ROSHN, Real Estate Developer, Becomes Platinum Sponsor of Saudi Champions Al-Ittihad.

RIYADH: Real estate developer ROSHN has signed a three-year deal to become the platinum sponsor of Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad. This sponsorship is part of the Public Investment Fund-owned company’s support for the development of the Kingdom’s sports sector, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday. ROSHN Group CEO David Grover described Al-Ittihad as an important part of the Saudi sports scene, citing the team’s recent signing of French superstar striker Karim Benzema.

BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Friday vowed to step up deportations as part of a crackdown on illegal residents in the country. “This matter is not up for debate, and orders have been given to the relevant authorities to implement what is necessary,” he said. Mikati’s comments came after the EU on Thursday announced a €1 billion ($1.07 billion) aid package for Lebanon, mostly to boost border control in a bid to curb refugee flows across the Mediterranean Sea to Cyprus and Italy. Lebanon hosts more than 1.5 million Syrian refugees.
