Kato Disqualified but Wins French Open Championship

PARIS: Japan’s Miyu Kato became a French Open champion on Thursday, four days after she was controversially disqualified from the women’s doubles for accidentally hitting a ball girl. Kato and her German partner Tim Puetz defeated Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the mixed doubles final at Roland Garros. “It has been challenging mentally in the last few days after my unjust disqualification from the women’s doubles,” Kato told the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd, reading from a prepared statement.

Saudi Electricity Co. invests $373m to enhance power grid through 3 projects.

RIYADH: Electricity networks across three Saudi governates are set to undergo SR1.4 billion ($373 million) worth of improvements to reduce the areas’ liquid fuel consumption and carbon emissions. State-owned Saudi Electricity Co. will invest the money across Rafha, Al-Wajh and Najran, reported the Saudi Press Agency.  Ensuring reliability and continuity, the company aims to maximize electric power generation units for network efficiency and subscribers’ benefits.

US Debt Ceiling Bill Passes House with Bipartisan Support

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives passed a bill to suspend the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling on Wednesday, with majority support from both Democrats and Republicans to overcome opposition led by hard-line conservatives and avoid a catastrophic default. The Republican-controlled House voted 314-117 to send the legislation to the Senate, which must enact the measure and get it to President Joe Biden’s desk before a Monday deadline, when the federal government is expected to run out of money to pay its bills.

Big inflows in US money market funds due to debt ceiling caution

BENGALURU: US money market funds saw big inflows in the week to May 24 as investors favored safer bets ahead of a deadline for politicians to agree an increase in the country’s debt ceiling, according to Reuters. According to Refinitiv Lipper data, US money market funds received a net $39.9 billion of inflows, the biggest week of net buying in four weeks.

Gamers Without Borders raises $10 million for charity

RIYADH: Gamers Without Borders, the world’s largest charitable esports event, has concluded this year’s edition by raising a total of $10 million for its humanitarian aid partners. The money will go to Direct Relief, International Medical Corps, UNICEF, King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, the UN’s World Food Programme and the UNHCR. The donations were made by teams, players and gamers worldwide. The funds will be used for urgent humanitarian projects and add to the work achieved through the $30 million in donations from the GWB’s three previous editions.

Saudi Arabia’s M3 Money Supply Increases by 4.74% Since December End

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s M3 money supply has surged 4.74 percent since December 2022, according to data released by the Saudi Central Bank, also known as SAMA. The M3 money supply, which is usually monitored as a broad measure of liquidity in the monetary system, reached SR2.61 billion ($696 billion) in the week ending May 11, rising from SR2.50 billion on Dec. 31. The former M3 money figure also reflects a 0.17 percent drop in the week ending May 11 to the week ending on May 4 when it stood at SR2.62 billion.
