Turkey seeks to host football Euros following Champions League final

GENEVA: Turkiye’s quest to host the men’s European Championship is among the great unfulfilled goals in world soccer. Having newly re-elected state President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sit next to UEFA leader Aleksander Čeferin at the Champions League final in Istanbul on Saturday should only help before Turkiye’s next two tournament bids are put to votes on Oct. 10.

Manchester City clinches first Champions League title by defeating Inter Milan

ISTANBUL: Manchester City won the first Champions League in their history on Saturday and secured a treble of trophies by beating Inter Milan 1-0. In a far closer match than many pundits had predicted, Rodri’s sweetly-struck goal proved the difference for Abu Dhabi-backed City, who have already won the Premier League and FA Cup this season. Rodri sidefooted in on 68 minutes after Bernardo Silva pulled back a cross that fell perfectly for the unmarked Spaniard at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

GCC’s Shared Mobility Accelerates with 62M Global Users by 2027

DUBAI: Shared mobility is gradually gaining a foothold in the Gulf Cooperation Council region as the automobile industry predictably joins other sectors in adapting to the sharing economy. Whether it is renting out office space, an Airbnb vacation home, or a fancy dress for a special occasion, more people around the world are embracing the concept of sharing resources and services as opposed to owning them. Companies are also changing their business models by leveraging the ongoing shift to a sharing economy and the transport sector is no exception.

Stuttgart triumphs over Hamburg 3-0 in Bundesliga playoff first leg

STUTTGART: Hamburger SV’s five-year wait to rejoin the Bundesliga looks set to continue. Serhou Guirassy helped to put Stuttgart in a commanding position to keep their place in Germany’s top division with a 3-0 win over Hamburg on Thursday in the first leg of their playoff. Guirassy had failed to make the most of a one-on-one chance and had a penalty saved in the first half, but the Guinea forward grabbed Stuttgart’s third goal early in the second half.

Greek Cup Final: Police Ban Traveling Fans Due to Violence Concerns

ATHENS: Police have issued a ban on traveling fans ahead of the Greek Cup final later on Wednesday because of fears of violence, despite an order for the match to be played without supporters in the stadium. League champion AEK Athens face PAOK in the central city of Volos after the authorities took several months to find a venue. Regional police chief Giorgis Dizes thanked the two clubs for publicly requesting that fans respect the ban.

Freiburg’s Win Over Wolfsburg Boosts Champions League Qualification Chances

FREIBURG, Germany: With a slice of luck and a goal from a retiring fan favorite, Freiburg beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday to stay in contention to qualify for the Champions League for the first time. Playing his last home game before retiring at the end of the season, striker Nils Petersen came off the bench to score in the 75th minute to take the game away from Wolfsburg — his first goal of the season — after Christian Günter gave Freiburg the lead with a fortunate deflected shot that looped over the goalkeeper.

Xabi Alonso confirms stay at Bayer Leverkusen, denies rumors

LEVERKUSEN, Germany: Coach Xabi Alonso is concentrating on Bayer Leverkusen and has dismissed speculation linking him with some of Europe’s biggest clubs. The 41-year-old Alonso has enjoyed a successful start to his first senior coaching job after turning Leverkusen’s fortunes around and he said Wednesday he’s not finished yet. “I’m very happy with the team and the club. I’m not thinking at all about my future,” Alonso said before Thursday’s Europa League semifinal match against Roma.
