VanVleet joins Houston; NBA free agency begins with few big names on the move

NEW YORK: Fred VanVleet bet on himself, and the Houston Rockets are the beneficiaries. On an opening night of free agency where most big names — Kyrie Irving, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, Kyle Kuzma and more — stayed put, VanVleet is headed to a new home. He agreed to a three-year deal Friday with the Rockets that’ll pay him about $130 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. ESPN first reported the agreement between VanVleet and the Rockets.

Top NBA Free Agency Players to Watch: Draymond Green, Kyrie Irving

NEW YORK: Some of the players to watch in NBA free agency, which starts Friday evening: Kyrie Irving, Dallas This one will be interesting. Irving is one of the best players in the NBA. He also tends to be a challenge, and evidently got unhappy over time at his previous stops — Cleveland, Boston and Brooklyn. It seems unlikely that Irving will want a short-term deal, but there aren’t many teams that can afford him, either Fred VanVleet, Toronto

HOUSTON: Oil prices edged higher on Friday with Brent poised for its first monthly gain this year, as a big drawdown in US oil stocks outweighed concerns that fuel demand will be dented further by more interest rate hikes, according to Reuters. Brent crude futures for September delivery rose 16 cents or 0.2 percent to stand at $74.67 as of 7:05 a.m. Saudi time. The less-traded front month contract, which expires on Friday, was up 30 cents at $74.64. US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 8 cents or 0.1 percent to $69.95.

“Soft Dollar Boosts Appeal: Gold Prices Rise”

RIYADH: Gold climbed on Monday after a weaker dollar made bullion more attractive for overseas investors, although prices hovered close to three-month lows as traders assessed prospects of more interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve. Spot gold rose 0.3 percent to $1,926.19 per ounce by 8:38 a.m. Saudi time. US gold futures also gained 0.3 percent to $1,936.00. Bullion slumped nearly 2 percent in the previous week as hawkish comments from Fed officials signaled more rate hikes to tame sticky inflation.
