Egypt’s Central Bank Maintains Stable Interest Rates

CAIRO: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) kept its key overnight interest rates unchanged on Thursday, saying commodity prices appear to be falling and economic growth is likely to recover in the fiscal year that begins next week. As expected, the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) left the lending rate steady at 19.25 percent and the deposit rate at 18.25 percent. Not one of 17 analysts polled by Reuters on Monday had forecast a change.

Crude Oil Slides as UK Rate Hike Sparks Demand Concerns

RIYADH: Oil prices fell for a second straight session and were headed for a weekly decline of more than 3 percent on Friday, as a higher-than-expected interest rate hike in Britain and warnings about looming rate rises in the US ignited concerns over demand, according to Reuters. Brent futures slipped 51 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $73.76 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 42 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $69.09 at 3:40 a.m. Saudi time.

Egypt seeks to join BRICS, confirms Russian ambassador

RIYADH: In a bid to enhance trade and economic cooperation, Egypt has officially applied to join the five-member BRICS bloc of emerging economies, according to Georgy Borizenko, the Russian ambassador to Cairo.  The BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. “Egypt has applied to join the BRICS group because one of the initiatives that BRICS is currently engaged in is the maximum transfer of trade to alternative currencies, whether national or the creation of some kind of joint currency. Egypt is very interested in this,” said Borizenko. 

Oil Prices Set to Rise on Optimistic China Demand

NEW YORK/SINGAPORE: Oil prices were set to snap a two-week losing streak despite trading marginally lower early on Friday, amid optimism about higher energy demand from top crude importer China and a weaker dollar, according to Reuters. Brent futures dipped 17 cents, or 0.2 percent, to $75.50 a barrel by 6:41 a.m. Saudi time, while US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 16 cents, also 0.2 percent, to $70.46 a barrel. Both benchmarks surged about 3 percent during the prior session.

Crude Oil Prices Drop 1% Prior to US Fed Rate Decision

RIYADH: Oil prices declined on Monday ahead of a US Federal Reserve meeting as investors tried to gauge the central bank’s appetite for further rate hikes, while concerns about China’s fuel demand growth and rising Russian crude supply weighed on the market.  Brent crude futures fell 89 cents, or 1.19 percent, to $73.90 a barrel by 9:23 a.m. Saudi time. US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $69.33 a barrel, also down 1.20 percent. 

Crude Oil Falls Amid Conflicting OPEC+ and Russia Messages and Stronger Dollar

RIYADH: Oil prices softened in early trade on Friday, weighed down by conflicting messages from Russia and Saudi Arabia ahead of the next policy meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, known as OPEC+,  and a stronger dollar, according to Reuters. Brent crude fell 30 cents to $75.96 a barrel at 3:15 a.m. GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate was down by 14 cents at $71.69 a barrel.
