Sudanese Doctor Allegedly Abducted Amid Smear Campaigns, According to Family

Date:

Dr Alaa Nogod, a prominent critic of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his National Congress Party, was taken from his home by 10 armed men claiming to be from Sudan’s military intelligence. They confiscated his laptop, notebooks, passport, and mobile phone before driving away without revealing his whereabouts. Nogod’s family reported that the men kicked him and expressed concern for his safety. Nogod has been targeted by threats and smear campaigns since leading NCP figures declared their support for the army in its conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Nogod’s friends and colleagues have alleged that unknown people fabricated a Facebook conversation between him and the RSF on May 24. Despite his medical career, Nogod was committed to bringing about democratic change in Sudan and was a member of the Forces for Freedom and Change – Central Command. He continued to speak out against the army after the October 2021 military coup, which derailed Sudan’s transition to democracy. Nogod’s detention has prompted activists and unions to call for his immediate release.
