Police in Peru have made a shocking discovery – a mummified human, estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old. The mummy was found in an isothermal bag that was once used by a 26-year-old delivery man, Julio Cesar Bermejo, to deliver food to people’s homes. Bermejo is currently in detention while investigators look into the case.
Bermejo told local media that the mummy, which he referred to as “Juanita”, was like his spiritual girlfriend. He said that he had been taking care of the mummy for almost 30 years, after his father brought it home.
The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the pre-Hispanic relic was a “mummified adult male individual, presumably from the eastern area of Puno”, a region in the Peruvian Andes. They also noted that the mummy was of a man at least 45 years old and was wrapped in bandages in the foetal position.
The mummy was discovered by police on Saturday while they were patrolling a park in the city of Puno, where Bermejo had been hanging out with friends. The discovery has raised many questions about how the mummy ended up in Bermejo’s possession and where it originally came from.
