“Newly Discovered Ancient Workshops and Tombs in Saqqara Necropolis Revealed by Egypt”

Date:

Egyptian authorities have revealed the discovery of ancient workshops and tombs at a Pharaonic necropolis near Cairo. The Saqqara necropolis is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital. The workshops, which date back to the 30th Pharaonic Dynasty and Ptolemaic period, were used to mummify humans and sacred animals. Archaeologists found clay pots and other items used in mummification, as well as ritual vessels. The tombs were for a top official from the Old Kingdom and a priest from the New Kingdom. The Egyptian government hopes that such discoveries will attract more tourists to the country and revive the industry following political turmoil after the 2011 uprising.
