Mikati’s Diplomatic Efforts to Calm Tension in Lebanon | TOME

Lebanon Calls for Implementation of International Resolutions for Stability

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has emphasized the importance of implementing international resolutions in order to achieve stability in southern Lebanon and the border region. Speaking at a Lebanese Cabinet meeting, Mikati stated that “talking about calm in Lebanon alone is illogical.” He called for the implementation of the 1949 Armistice Agreement and all its provisions, without any changes, as a starting point for discussing stability arrangements in the south.

Mikati highlighted the recent diplomatic efforts in Lebanon, including the visit of the German foreign minister. He expressed satisfaction with the understanding of the Lebanese perspective, which he conveyed to US envoy Amos Hochstein. Mikati stressed the importance of acknowledging international decisions dating back to 1949 up to Resolution 1701.

While Lebanon continues to comply with international legitimacy and respect all international resolutions, Mikati pointed out that Israel has not implemented these decisions. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and demanded that Lebanon’s brothers not be subjected to genocide and destruction. Mikati commended South Africa’s initiative in filing a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice for committing genocide in Gaza.

In light of the recent cyberattack at Beirut Airport, Mikati urged ministers to ensure the safety of the ministries’ computer systems and review their protection methods. The breach is believed to be external, and security bodies are currently investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, UK’s Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy visited Lebanon to discuss possible solutions to help contain the escalating violence in the region. Lammy emphasized the need for a political solution, the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, and calm instead of escalation. He expressed hope for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the restoration of calm in the region.

During his visit, Lammy met with Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Gen. Joseph Aoun. The head of Iran-backed Hezbollah’s Judicial Council, Sheikh Mohammed Yazbek, dismissed Hochstein’s mission to Lebanon as fruitless as long as Gaza is still under fire. Yazbek warned Israel that any escalation by the enemy will be met with an even greater response.

Yazbek also condemned the attacks by US and British forces on Yemen, stating that these brutal attacks will not weaken the determination of Yemen’s people, army, and leadership.

Lebanon’s call for the implementation of international resolutions highlights the country’s commitment to stability and peace in the region. By urging the enforcement of existing agreements and resolutions, Lebanon aims to address the ongoing conflicts and ensure the safety and well-being of its people.

The international community must support Lebanon’s efforts and work towards a peaceful resolution that respects international humanitarian law and upholds human rights. Only through collective action and adherence to international legitimacy can lasting peace and stability be achieved in the region. It is crucial for all parties involved to engage in meaningful dialogue and find common ground for a peaceful coexistence.
