Lebanon Rescues Over 50 People from Sinking Migrant Boat
Lebanon’s army successfully rescued more than 50 individuals, primarily Syrians, from a sinking migrant boat off the country’s northern coast. The military received information about a vessel in distress off the coast of Tripoli, a city in north Lebanon, which was being used for illegal people smuggling. Naval forces swiftly responded and managed to save 51 people, including two Palestinians and 49 Syrians.
The Lebanese Red Cross provided immediate assistance to those rescued. However, the destination of the boat remains unknown. Typically, migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees leaving Lebanon by boat are in search of a better life in Europe, often heading towards the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which is less than 200 kilometers away.
Lebanon is currently hosting approximately two million Syrians, with around 800,000 registered with the United Nations. This makes Lebanon the country with the highest number of refugees per capita globally. The economic collapse in late 2019 has exacerbated the situation, turning Lebanon into a launchpad for migrants. Authorities frequently announce the thwarting of smuggling operations by sea and the arrest of both smugglers and potential migrants.
In addition to Syrians fleeing war and economic hardships, Lebanese nationals have also been undertaking perilous voyages towards Europe. Palestinian refugees are also among those seeking refuge elsewhere. Just a few weeks ago, on December 1, Lebanon’s army disrupted a smuggling operation involving 110 individuals, mostly Syrians, attempting to leave the country by sea.
The recent rescue operation comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region. The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been ongoing for weeks, with skirmishes also occurring across the Lebanon-Israel border, primarily involving the Israeli army and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, an ally of Hamas.
The rescue highlights the desperate circumstances that drive individuals to risk their lives on dangerous journeys in search of safety and a better future. The situation in Lebanon, compounded by the economic crisis and the influx of refugees, has created a dire humanitarian situation. The country’s resources are stretched thin, making it increasingly challenging to provide adequate support to both its own citizens and the large refugee population.
