Iraq investigates disappearance of Israeli-Russian academic

Date:

Investigation Launched into Disappearance of Israeli-Russian Academic in Iraq

Iraq has launched an investigation into the case of Elizabeth Tsurkov, a dual Israeli-Russian academic who has been missing in the country since March. The announcement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Tsurkov is still alive and that Iraq is responsible for her safety. It is believed that Tsurkov is being held by the Shiite group Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed organization designated as a terrorist group by the US government.

Tsurkov, an expert on the Middle East with a focus on war-torn Syria, is currently pursuing a doctorate at Princeton University and is affiliated with the Washington-based think tank New Lines Institute. Her work has been widely quoted by international media over the years. Tsurkov’s last tweet was posted on March 21, raising concerns about her well-being.

One of the key factors in this case is the fact that Tsurkov could not have used her Israeli passport to enter Iraq due to the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Instead, she entered Iraq using her Russian passport, as confirmed by Netanyahu. This raises questions about how she was able to navigate her way into the country and what her intentions were.

The Iraqi government has not yet released an official statement regarding Tsurkov’s disappearance, citing ongoing investigations. Bassem Al-Awadi, a government spokesman, stated that they are unable to provide specific details at this time. However, it is clear that they are taking the matter seriously and are actively working to determine Tsurkov’s whereabouts.

Kataeb Hezbollah, the group suspected of holding Tsurkov, has neither confirmed nor denied their involvement in her disappearance. However, they did release a statement calling for the identification and prosecution of Iraqis who facilitate the work of Israeli citizens in a country that prohibits engagement with Israel. This suggests that they may have played a role in Tsurkov’s kidnapping.

Iran’s influence in Iraq is a significant factor in this case. Since the US-led invasion in 2003, Iran has emerged as a major power broker in Iraq, supporting Shiite groups and militias that have gained significant influence in the country. Shortly after Tsurkov’s disappearance, it was reported that an Iranian citizen involved in her kidnapping had been detained by Iraqi authorities. The Iranian Embassy in Baghdad was reportedly pressuring for his release and deportation to Iran. This further complicates the situation and raises questions about Iran’s potential involvement.

Israel, considering Iran to be its greatest enemy, has expressed concerns about Tsurkov’s safety. They cite Iran’s hostile rhetoric, support for militant groups like Hezbollah, and its suspected nuclear program as reasons for their apprehension. The Israeli government is urging Iraq to take immediate action to ensure Tsurkov’s safe return.

As the investigation into Elizabeth Tsurkov’s disappearance continues, it is crucial for all parties involved to cooperate fully and provide any relevant information. The safety and well-being of individuals, regardless of their nationality or background, should always be a top priority. It is hoped that Tsurkov will be found safe and sound, and that this incident will serve as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and ensuring the safety of individuals in volatile regions.
