The Indian Navy Successfully Rescues Hijacked Iranian Fishing Vessel
In a daring operation in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy successfully freed a hijacked Iranian fishing vessel from nine armed pirates. The vessel, Al-Kambar 786, was southwest of the Yemeni island of Socotra when it was boarded by pirates on March 28. The navy’s swift response led to the rescue of the vessel’s crew, who were unharmed during the ordeal.
The operation was carried out by the INS Sumedha and INS Trishul, with more than 12 hours of intense coercive tactical measures being employed to force the pirates to surrender. The crew of 23 Pakistani nationals were safely rescued, and Indian Naval specialist teams are currently conducting thorough checks on the fishing vessel to ensure its seaworthiness before escorting it to a safe area for normal fishing activities to resume.

In total, India has responded to 18 incidents, deploying 21 ships and 5,000 personnel in rotation. Over 1,000 vessels have been boarded and investigated as part of these operations. The increase in pirate activity in the region has been attributed to the focus of Western forces on protecting shipping from attacks by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea. Since November, there have been more than 20 hijackings or attempted hijackings by pirates, leading to rising insurance and security costs for global shipping companies.
