NICOSIA: A child discovered unconscious on a boat drifting for days in the eastern Mediterranean has died, health authorities in Cyprus said on Thursday. The girl was among a group of 60 Syrians who were located by a Cypriot search and rescue team on a heavily-loaded fishing boat 30 nautical miles off Cyprus on Wednesday morning. They had been at sea since Jan. 18, after sailing from Lebanon. “Unfortunately one of the three children has died. It was a sudden death caused by cardiac arrest,” a spokesman for Cyprus’s national health organization told Alpha Cyprus TV.

Kuwait’s Emir Allows Deputy PM to Temporarily Serve as Prime Minister

KUWAIT: Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah of Kuwait issued a decree on Wednesday authorizing Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Al-Sabah to serve temporarily as prime minister, the Kuwait News Agency reported. He will stand in for Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, who has been tasked with taking on the responsibilities of deputy emir while Sheikh Mishal is out of the country. Sheikh Mishal became emir of Juwait in December following the death of his predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, at the age of 86.
