Al-Shabab attacks AU peacekeepers in Somalia base

Date:

Al-Shabab militants have attacked a military base in Somalia, which housed Ugandan forces of the African Union peacekeeping mission. The base, located in Bulamarer, was attacked on Friday and the number of casualties is yet to be confirmed by the AU mission. Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that it killed 137 soldiers. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has been assisting Somalia’s federal government in its fight against the al-Qaeda-linked group since 2022. The group has been fighting to establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law since 2006.
