US High School Graduation Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 5 Injured

According to police, a man armed with four handguns opened fire into a crowd after a high school graduation ceremony in Richmond, Virginia, killing two people and injuring five others. The suspect, a 19-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the shooting and found in possession of the four handguns. Interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards stated that the suspect is likely to be charged with two counts of second-degree murder and other offenses. The deceased were identified as men aged 18 and 36. Among the injured, a 31-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries, while four other males aged 14, 32, 55, and 58 were expected to survive. A nine-year-old girl was also struck by a car in the chaos that ensued, while multiple other people were injured in falls or suffered from anxiety. The shooting took place in Monroe Park, adjacent to the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, after a graduation ceremony for Huguenot High School. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras stated that the new graduates were outside taking photos with their families and friends when the shooting broke out. The US has unfortunately become accustomed to mass shootings in public places such as schools, shopping centers, and churches.
