UN agency barred from delivering aid to North Gaza | TOME

Date:

The Gaza Strip is facing a dire humanitarian crisis, with the threat of famine looming large in northern Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees has been working tirelessly to provide aid to the region, but their efforts have been hampered by Israel’s decision to bar aid deliveries in the area.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, expressed his outrage at Israel’s decision, stating that it was intentional and obstructing lifesaving assistance during a man-made famine. Israel, on the other hand, defended its actions by claiming that UNRWA had forsaken its role in facilitating aid to northern Gaza. Despite this, COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry body responsible for Palestinian civilian affairs, stated that Israel goes to great lengths to facilitate aid to northern Gaza.

The decision to block aid deliveries to northern Gaza has left thousands of people on the brink of famine. A UN-backed food security assessment warned that famine was projected to hit the region by May unless urgent intervention was taken. UNRWA has not been able to deliver food to the north since January 29, further exacerbating the already dire situation.

Martin Griffiths, head of the UN humanitarian coordination office, emphasized the importance of UNRWA in providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza. He called for the decision to block food convoys to be revoked, as it only pushes thousands closer to famine. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization, echoed these sentiments, stating that blocking UNRWA aid deliveries denies starving people the ability to survive.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has taken a toll on the civilian population in Gaza. The October 7 attack by Hamas triggered a war that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, mostly civilians. Israel has accused UNRWA staff members of participating in the attack and has labeled the agency as a front for Hamas.

In addition to blocking aid deliveries, Israeli authorities have also rejected a UN request to send a team to Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza to evacuate injured individuals. The situation in Gaza is dire, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to the non-stop nightmare endured by Gaza’s 2.4 million people. The international community must come together to provide urgent assistance to the people of Gaza and put an end to the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict.

It is crucial that Israel allows UNRWA to resume aid deliveries to northern Gaza to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. The lives of thousands of people are at stake, and immediate action is needed to ensure that they receive the assistance they desperately need. The international community must step up and support efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza.
