UAE to open 6,000 rest stations for delivery drivers during summer | TOME

Date:

With the scorching summer heat in the UAE, the safety and well-being of outdoor workers, especially delivery riders, are of utmost importance. To address this concern, the UAE government, in partnership with various entities, is set to open 6,000 rest stations across the Emirates to provide delivery drivers with a more comfortable midday break during the hot summer months.

The initiative aims to ensure that delivery riders have access to shaded areas and cooling equipment during the nationwide midday outdoor work ban, which runs from June 15 to September 15. This ban prohibits any task or work performed under direct sunlight or open-air areas from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. to protect workers from occupational hazards and injuries due to the extreme summer heat.

Recognizing the unique nature of the delivery services sector, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization emphasized the importance of providing adequate rest areas for delivery workers who are constantly on the move. Last year, a similar project saw the establishment of 365 rest stations for delivery riders during their midday break. This year, delivery companies such as Talabat, Deliveroo, Noon, and Careem have once again partnered with government agencies to support this initiative.

Moreover, restaurants, shopping centers, retail stores, and cloud kitchens have also joined the effort to offer rest areas for delivery drivers. This collaborative approach between government entities and private-sector companies highlights the commitment to ensuring the well-being of outdoor workers, particularly during the sweltering summer months.

The annual noon break, now in its 20th year, provides much-needed respite for outdoor workers facing extreme temperatures that can soar up to 50 degrees Celsius or higher. Companies are required to comply with regulations by providing shaded areas and cooling equipment for workers during the three-hour break. Failure to adhere to these guidelines can result in fines of up to Dh5,000 ($1,360) per worker and a maximum of Dh50,000 for multiple violations.

While the regulations are stringent, they are essential for safeguarding the health and safety of outdoor workers in the UAE. The provision of rest stations and adherence to the midday outdoor work ban demonstrate a proactive approach towards protecting workers from heat-related illnesses and injuries.

As we navigate through the hot summer months, it is crucial for both employers and employees to prioritize safety measures and ensure that adequate precautions are in place to mitigate the risks associated with working in high temperatures. By working together and implementing initiatives like the establishment of rest stations for delivery riders, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for all workers in the UAE.
