UAE minister, Cypriot officials discuss Gaza relief efforts

Date:

The UAE and Cyprus Address Humanitarian Situation in Gaza

In a recent meeting, the UAE’s minister of state for international cooperation, Reem Al-Hashimy, engaged with Cypriot officials to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The primary focus of the meeting was to ensure the delivery of relief aid following the suspension of the maritime corridor between Cyprus and Gaza due to Israeli violations.

The discussions, which took place with Marilena Raouna, Cypriot minister of state for European affairs, and Andreas Antoniades, accountant general at the Treasury Ministry, aimed to strengthen existing channels for humanitarian efforts. This comes in light of Israel’s targeting of a World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza on April 2, which disrupted relief efforts within the Maritime Corridor Initiative.

The Maritime Corridor Initiative, launched on March 8 with broad international support, was designed to provide aid by sea and collaborate with Sigrid Kaag, UN senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza. Al-Hashimy emphasized the importance of a continued multilateral approach to address Gaza’s deteriorating humanitarian situation and ensure the immediate and widespread flow of aid through all available channels – land, air, and sea.

Furthermore, Al-Hashimy stressed the need to open additional routes and crossings to transport more aid and intensify efforts to alleviate human suffering in Gaza and prevent famine. Both the Emirati and Cypriot officials condemned violence against humanitarian workers and urged Israeli authorities to commit to preventing similar incidents in the future. They emphasized Israel’s responsibility under international humanitarian law to secure humanitarian efforts and protect relief workers.

The meeting between the UAE and Cyprus highlights the ongoing commitment of both countries to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ensure the delivery of much-needed aid to the region. By working together and engaging in multilateral efforts, they aim to make a significant impact in alleviating the suffering of the people in Gaza.

As the situation in Gaza continues to worsen, it is crucial for countries like the UAE and Cyprus to come together and find innovative solutions to provide relief to those in need. By exploring different channels for aid delivery and collaborating with international organizations, they can make a real difference in improving the lives of those affected by the crisis.

In conclusion, the meeting between the UAE and Cyprus serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises. By working together and leveraging their resources, countries can make a meaningful impact in providing relief to those who need it most. It is essential for all parties involved to continue their efforts and ensure that aid reaches those who need it most in Gaza.
