New Electrical Transmission Line Connects Afar, Saudi Arabia to Yusufiya, Iraq

DUBAI: Aiming to step up energy security and usher in a new era in regional cooperation, Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, the governor of the Eastern Province, inaugurated an electrical interconnection project between the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority and Iraq. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the connection was a dream turned reality, in an interview with Al-Arabiya. He said this landmark deal could achieve tangible economic benefits and enhance energy security.

Biggest Weekly Gold Drop Since Feb Expected Due to Hawkish Fed

RIYADH: Gold prices were en route to their worst week since early February on Friday as the dollar strengthened after US Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell reiterated that more interest rate hikes were in the offing, according to Reuters. Spot gold was up 0.4 percent to $1,921.29 per ounce by 1543 p.m. Saudi time, yet stayed close to a three-month low hit earlier in the session. Prices are down 1.8 percent for the week. US gold futures gained 0.4 percent to $1,931.40.

Crude Oil Slides as UK Rate Hike Sparks Demand Concerns

RIYADH: Oil prices fell for a second straight session and were headed for a weekly decline of more than 3 percent on Friday, as a higher-than-expected interest rate hike in Britain and warnings about looming rate rises in the US ignited concerns over demand, according to Reuters. Brent futures slipped 51 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $73.76 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 42 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $69.09 at 3:40 a.m. Saudi time. 

“April imports to Saudi Arabia decrease by 16.1% to $15.4bn”

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s merchandise imports decreased 16.1 percent to SR57.9 billion ($15.4 billion) in April 2023 compared to SR69 billion in March 2023, according to the latest data released by the General Authority for Statistics.  However, the Kingdom’s merchandise imports increased by 1 percent in April 2023 compared to SR57.3 million in April 2022. According to the report, overall merchandise exports decreased 25.2 percent to SR103 billion in April 2023 compared to SR137.7 billion in the same month last year.

Al-Falih: Saudi Arabia Plans More Airlines to Meet Demand

RIYADH: Within months of launching Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia is exploring the possibility of adding more airlines to its growing aviation sector, revealed a top minister.  In an interview with Al-Arabiya on the sidelines of the ongoing Paris Airshow, Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih said that the Kingdom’s aviation sector is witnessing significant growth, necessitating the country to look at the possibility of introducing more airlines to meet the rising demand.  

Islamic Banks in UAE See $177bn Asset Growth in Q1

RIYADH: Reflecting the growing popularity of Islamic financing, gross assets of the Shariah-compliant banks operating in the UAE grew to 650 billion dirhams ($177 billion) by the end of the first quarter of 2023, a year-over-year increase of 7.31 percent compared to 605.7 billion dirhams in the same period last year, according to figures by the Central Bank of the UAE.  

flynas signs $3.7bn deal with Airbus for 30 planes

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s budget airline flynas has signed a $3.73 billion agreement with Airbus to buy 30 aircraft, Saudi state TV reported on Monday. The deal was signed at the Paris Air Show by Bandar Al-Mohanna, flynas CEO and managing director, and Christian Scherer, Airbus chief commercial officer and head of international, in the presence of Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Saleh Al-Jasser, Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, president of General Authority of Civil Aviation, and Ayed Aljeaid, chairman of the board of NAS Holding.
