“April imports to Saudi Arabia decrease by 16.1% to $15.4bn”

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s merchandise imports decreased 16.1 percent to SR57.9 billion ($15.4 billion) in April 2023 compared to SR69 billion in March 2023, according to the latest data released by the General Authority for Statistics.  However, the Kingdom’s merchandise imports increased by 1 percent in April 2023 compared to SR57.3 million in April 2022. According to the report, overall merchandise exports decreased 25.2 percent to SR103 billion in April 2023 compared to SR137.7 billion in the same month last year.

Positive Non-Oil Outlook in UAE Despite Slight PMI Dip in May

RIYADH: The UAE’s non-oil private sector growth outlook remained positive in May, even as the seasonally adjusted S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index fell to 55.5 compared to 56.6 in April.   The S&P Global report noted that improved operating conditions drove business confidence to its strongest levels since October 2021.   According to the index, PMI readings above 50 show non-oil private sector growth, while those below 50 signal contraction.  

Qatar’s April Trade Surplus Reaches $6 Billion

RIYADH: Qatar recorded a trade surplus of 22 billion Qatari riyals ($6 billion) in April 2023, according to a report released by the country’s Planning and Statistics Authority.   The data reflects a 3.5 percent increase over March while a 35.6 percent decline on an annual basis.   The value of merchandise imports during April 2023 also fell 6.3 percent from the previous year and 9.3 percent from the last month to reach an estimated 8.7 billion riyals.  

Saudi point-of-sale transactions decline for second consecutive week

RIYADH: Spending by Saudis fell for the second week in a row in the seven days ending May 20, according to point-of-sale transactions data released by the Saudi Central Bank.  The food and beverage sector saw the biggest drop in POS value, falling by SR136.17 million ($36.3 million), or 8 percent, the figures published by the bank, also known as SAMA, showed.  The Kingdom’s aggregate POS transactions shrunk by 7.3 percent last week, totaling SR10.1 billion, driven by the decrease in food and drink spending, showed the data. 

TASI drops despite healthcare sector rally at closing bell

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index slipped 24.18 points, or 0.22 percent, to close at 11,206.02 on Tuesday as 111 of the 224 stocks rose, while 95 declined.  Stocks listed on the Pharma, Biotech, & Life Science index soared the most, with a 9.28 percent climb, while the stocks of the Energy and the Telecommunication sectors fell 1.96 and 1 percent, respectively.  While the parallel market Nomu rose 0.57 percent to close at 20,682.62, the MSCI Tadawul Index dropped by 0.18 percent to close at 1,504.59.
