The prime minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare, has called for a review of his nation’s security treaty with Australia. In 2021, at Honiara’s request, Canberra deployed troops to the Solomon Islands alongside defence personnel from Fiji and New Zealand following anti-government protests. This deployment was part of a 2017 security treaty between Australia and the Solomon Islands, allowing for the rapid deployment of Australian police and defence personnel if needed and with the consent of both countries.
During their meeting, Sogavare expressed his appreciation for Australia’s ongoing support in the area of security. However, he also emphasized the need to review the current security treaty between the two countries to address the changing security challenges faced by both nations.
