Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has called on UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to push for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. Yousaf, whose wife’s parents are currently trapped in Gaza, has urged Cleverly to use the strong relationship between the UK and Israel to establish a humanitarian corridor that would allow civilians to safely leave the war zone.
In a letter addressed to Cleverly, Yousaf expressed his concern for the innocent lives being lost as a result of the attacks by Hamas. He emphasized that it is unfair for innocent men, women, and children to suffer the consequences of actions carried out by a terrorist group.
Nadia El-Nakla, Yousaf’s wife, revealed that her parents have been trapped in Gaza since the start of the conflict. She described their fear and anxiety about the situation, especially considering that some of their relatives have already lost their homes due to missile strikes.
El-Nakla’s parents had traveled from their home in Dundee, Scotland, to Gaza to visit their son and Maged’s ill 92-year-old mother. Unfortunately, shortly after their arrival, Hamas launched an unexpected attack on Israel. Since then, hundreds of lives have been lost on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
The couple had initially planned to leave Gaza on Tuesday through the Rafah border crossing. However, the crossing was bombed, leaving them with no means of escape. Nadia expressed her parents’ terror and described the continuous bombardment from land, sea, and air.
From Bute House, the official residence of Scotland’s first minister in Edinburgh, Nadia shared her parents’ deep fear and concern for their safety. She also expressed her distress over the language being used to describe the conflict, particularly the threat of Gaza being “obliterated” in response to Hamas attacks.
Nadia revealed that she had been in contact with the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, but as of now, there is no way for her parents to leave Gaza. If an opportunity arises, they will face an incredibly difficult decision as they would have to leave behind relatives who do not possess UK passports.
Yousaf’s plea to Cleverly highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action. By leveraging the UK’s relationship with Israel, Yousaf hopes to establish a humanitarian corridor through the Rafah border crossing.
