A boat carrying around 500 refugees and migrants, including 45 women and 56 children, is in distress in the Mediterranean Sea after leaving Libya for Europe, according to humanitarian organisations. The vessel is taking on water and an Italian NGO, Emergency, has sent its rescue vessel Life Support to the area, but it will take 10 hours to reach the location in Maltese waters. The nationalities of those on board are unknown. Emergency has contacted Maltese authorities, but has received no response since Tuesday when the vessel was flagged by Alarm Phone, a non-governmental organisation that relays distress calls from the Mediterranean to emergency services.
