Middle East Quake Round-Up

Date:

This week has been filled with devastating news from the Middle East and North Africa. In Turkey and Syria, two more earthquakes have hit, causing further fear and panic among survivors of the first two quakes. The death toll continues to rise, and those affected are now having to focus on their own survival rather than seeking out survivors. In Israel, the far-right government is pushing through changes to the judiciary despite public protests, while in the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces have conducted their deadliest raid in years. Meanwhile in Tunisia, President Kais Saied has arrested more opponents as he continues to consolidate power.

Despite all the bad news, there have been some glimmers of hope. Donations from all over the world, including a destitute Bosnian grandmother and struggling Rohingya refugees, have been pouring in to help those affected by the earthquakes. And in Ireland, a top-flight football club has released a kit featuring the Palestinian colours as a show of solidarity.

The quote of the week comes from Khaled al-Hamo, whose son Mohammed started cutting hair for free after the earthquakes. “Our moral code tells us to help people, so my sons do this … we don’t wait for someone to tell us.” It’s a powerful reminder of the kindness and generosity that can be found in times of crisis.

This week has been a difficult one for many in the Middle East and North Africa. But it’s also been a reminder of the strength and resilience of those affected, and of the power of solidarity and compassion in times of hardship.
