Lessons on Modern Warfare from Ukraine’s Battlefield

Date:

The war in Ukraine has been a major turning point in the way future wars will be fought. Social media has been a major tool in the conflict, with videos of Russian armour being destroyed by Ukrainian operatives being shared widely and amplifying an underdog narrative. This has had a psychological effect on the Russian population, with many choosing to flee rather than enlist in the armed forces. The use of drones and precision weapons, such as the Javelin anti-tank missile, has also been key in levelling the battlefield and demonstrating the power of relatively inexpensive weapons. Tanks are still important, but their role is changing, with a focus on combined arms operations and the need for proper support. The targeting of civilian populations has also been a major feature of this war, with Russia firing thousands of missiles at civilians. Ukraine has responded by developing their own air defence systems and information campaigns to bring support from the West. Finally, Ukraine has demonstrated the value of alliances, with NATO members providing support and protection even though Ukraine is not a member. All of these lessons will be invaluable in preparing for future wars.
