Kuwait and China Sign Seven MoUs for Large-Scale Construction Projects
Kuwait and China have recently signed seven memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for large-scale construction projects. The agreements were made during the visit of Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Hangzhou, China, where he attended the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games. This visit marks the second meeting between Sheikh Mishal and Chinese President Xi Jinping since the Gulf Cooperation Council-China Summit for Cooperation and Development held in Saudi Arabia last December.
The Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister, Saad Al-Barrak, described the visit as “very important” as the government works towards updating its 2035 vision. The first MoU focuses on the completion of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port. Al-Barrak stated that around 50 percent of the first phase of the port is already complete, and they aim to finalize it swiftly to commence operations. China, known for its expertise in construction and management, will play a crucial role in the execution of this project.
In addition to the port, other agreements were signed for various projects, including renewable energy, the creation of a low-carbon recycling green system, water treatment station infrastructure, and economic and free zones. Jassem Al-Ostad, Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, emphasized the importance of clean and affordable energy. He stated that the crown prince has given instructions to build renewable energy stations to meet Kuwait’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Furthermore, one of the MoUs focuses on the development of advanced housing cities in Kuwait. This aligns with the government’s plans to provide housing care for its citizens. The crown prince’s visit also included discussions with President Xi on expanding bilateral relations between Kuwait and China. President Xi acknowledged Kuwait as the first Gulf country to establish diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1971. He also highlighted the significant role played by the Kuwait Fund in providing loans to China during the 1980s.
During his visit, Sheikh Mishal also met with executives from Huawei, a leading technology company. The purpose of this meeting was to strengthen Kuwait’s partnership with Huawei in information technology and communication services. This collaboration will contribute to the development and advancement of Kuwait’s digital infrastructure.
The signing of these MoUs reflects the commitment of both Kuwait and China to strengthen their bilateral relations and promote cooperation in various sectors.
