A 31-year-old man has been arrested in rural Japan after a rare gun and knife attack that resulted in the deaths of four people. The suspect barricaded himself in his father’s home near the city of Nakano, northwest of Tokyo, resulting in a 12-hour standoff with police. The attack began on Thursday afternoon when a woman was stabbed in the back by a man wearing camouflage and carrying a large knife. The suspect is accused of shooting two police officers who arrived at the scene, as well as another woman who had been lying on the ground outside the house since Thursday afternoon. The motive for the attack is unknown, and the suspect has not been formally identified. Japan has a low murder rate and some of the world’s toughest gun laws.
