Israel kills 3 Hezbollah members on Syria border: Lebanon army source

Date:

The recent Israeli strikes targeting a convoy of tankers entering Lebanon from Syria have once again escalated tensions in the region. The strikes resulted in the death of three members of Hezbollah, a Lebanese military source and a war monitor confirmed.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group and ally of Hamas, has been engaged in near-daily conflicts with Israeli forces since the outbreak of war in Gaza following an attack by the Palestinian group on October 7. The latest incident saw Israeli fighter jets targeting a convoy of tankers and a building in a northeastern village on the border with Syria. The strikes resulted in the death of three Hezbollah members and left three others wounded.

According to the Israeli military, the targeted area belonged to the Hezbollah 4400 unit, which is responsible for smuggling weapons to and from Lebanon. The military confirmed hitting two targets in the Baalbek region of eastern Lebanon. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a total of five people were killed in the Israeli strike, including three Syrians working with Hezbollah and two Lebanese individuals.

In response to the downing of one of its drones over Lebanon, the Israeli army also carried out strikes in southern Lebanon overnight. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for shooting down the Israeli Hermes drone, marking the fifth such incident since February. The militant group further stated that it had conducted several attacks against Israeli targets, including a drone strike on a military position in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

The ongoing violence in the region has taken a heavy toll, with at least 462 people killed in Lebanon over the past eight months, primarily fighters but also including around 90 civilians. On the Israeli side of the border, the army reported the deaths of at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians.

The latest escalation underscores the volatile nature of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with both sides engaging in retaliatory attacks that have resulted in significant casualties. The use of drones has added a new dimension to the conflict, with both parties utilizing these unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance and offensive purposes.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is imperative for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to prevent further loss of life and escalation of hostilities. The international community must also play a proactive role in mediating talks between Israel and Hezbollah to de-escalate tensions and work towards a lasting peace in the region.
