Hamas Seeks Written Guarantees from US for Ceasefire and Israeli Withdrawal

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been a source of immense suffering and loss for both sides. In an effort to bring an end to the violence, the United States has proposed a truce plan that includes a phased ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, Hamas is seeking written guarantees from the US before agreeing to the proposal.

The US-backed plan, announced by President Joe Biden at the end of May, outlines a gradual process for ending the eight-month war between Israel and Hamas. The plan includes the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza, the pullback of Israeli forces over two phases, the freeing of Palestinian prisoners, and the reconstruction of Gaza. It also involves the return of the remains of deceased hostages in a third phase.

While Israel has reportedly accepted the proposal, Hamas has expressed concerns about the lack of explicit guarantees for the transition between the phases of the plan. According to Egyptian security sources, Hamas is insisting on assurances for an automatic transition from one phase to another as per the agreement laid out by President Biden.

In response to the proposal, Hamas has indicated a willingness to engage in negotiations, describing its response as “positive” and opening a “wide pathway” to reach an agreement. However, an Israeli official speaking on condition of anonymity has characterized Hamas’ response as a rejection of Biden’s proposal for a hostage release, stating that the group has “changed all of the main and most meaningful parameters.”

In its response to the plan, Hamas has reportedly proposed a new timeline for a permanent ceasefire with Israel and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, including Rafah. The group is seeking written guarantees from the United States to ensure a smooth transition between the phases of the ceasefire plan.

The conflict in Gaza has taken a devastating toll on both Palestinians and Israelis. More than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive in the Hamas-ruled enclave, according to health officials. The war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of some 250 others.

Negotiators from the US, Egypt, and Qatar have been working tirelessly to mediate a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Over 100 hostages are believed to still be in captivity in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict.

As efforts continue to bring an end to the violence in Gaza, Hamas’ demand for written guarantees from the United States underscores the complexity of the situation. The international community must work together to support a peaceful resolution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved and paves the way for lasting peace in the region.
