EU Commissioner: Label AI-Generated Content

Vera Jourova, the deputy head of the European Commission, has called for measures to be implemented to combat disinformation. Jourova has suggested that companies using AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Bard, which have the ability to generate disinformation, should label such content as part of their efforts to tackle fake news. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was launched last year with the backing of Microsoft, has become the fastest-growing consumer application in history. However, concerns are mounting about potential abuse of the technology and the possibility that bad actors and even governments may use it to produce far more disinformation than before. Companies such as Google, Microsoft and Meta Platforms that have signed up to the EU Code of Practice to tackle disinformation should report next month on AI safeguards they have put into place. Jourova warned Twitter, which quit the Code of Practice last week, to expect more regulatory scrutiny.
