“Economic Crisis Hits ‘Mercy Tables’ in Egypt Ahead of Ramadan”

Ramadan Tables of Mercy in Egypt Facing Challenges Due to Rising Food Prices

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Egypt is facing challenges in providing free iftar meals to those in need due to rising food prices and shortages. The tradition of setting up “tables of mercy” on the streets to offer free iftar meals to lower-income individuals may be impacted this year as the cost of food items continues to increase.

The high prices of essential food items such as meat, rice, and vegetables have made it difficult for philanthropists to continue supporting the tables of mercy. According to Kamal Khairy, a cook who has been involved in preparing meals for the tables in previous years, the cost of a kilogram of meat has reached 450 Egyptian pounds ($14.56) in some areas, while a kilogram of rice now costs 40 pounds. The rising prices have forced some philanthropists to reconsider their participation in setting up the tables this year.

One philanthropist, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared his struggles with Arab News, stating that financial constraints have made it challenging for him to continue providing free iftar meals near his factory in Al-Azhar. The economic difficulties have also affected businesses, with some owners cutting expenses to cope with the financial strain.

Uncle Ahmed, a car park attendant in Cairo, expressed his reliance on the tables of mercy set up on the streets during Ramadan. He noted that the size of the meals provided at the tables has decreased, with fewer options available compared to previous years. Despite the challenges, Ahmed remains understanding of the situation and hopes for a resolution to the ongoing crises in Egypt.

Farid Jamal, a worker at a charity hosting a table of mercy, highlighted the changing dynamics of the guests attending the iftar meals. He observed that people are arriving earlier than usual to secure their spots at the table, indicating a shift in social composition. Young men and individuals from higher social backgrounds are now seen participating in the tradition, reflecting the widespread impact of rising food prices on all segments of society.

The challenges faced by the tables of mercy in Egypt underscore the urgent need for support and solidarity during these difficult times. As the cost of living continues to rise, it is essential for communities to come together and find innovative solutions to ensure that those in need receive the necessary support during Ramadan and beyond.

Despite the obstacles, the spirit of generosity and compassion that defines Ramadan in Egypt remains strong. As individuals and organizations navigate the challenges posed by rising food prices, there is hope that collective efforts will help alleviate the burden on those most affected by the economic hardships. By working together and supporting one another, Egypt can overcome these challenges and continue to uphold the tradition of providing for those in need during the holy month of Ramadan.
