DR Congo Leader Urges Macron to Support Sanctions on Rwanda

Date:

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to defend the sovereignty of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and be an “unwavering ally” in the country’s conflict with Rwanda. DRC President Felix Tshisekedi urged Macron to pursue international sanctions against Rwanda for its alleged military support of M23 rebels. Macron said he would wait for the end of ongoing peace negotiations before considering such a step, but promised that France would be “faithful to its role” in defending the DRC’s integrity. The eastern DRC has been in conflict for decades, with armed groups fighting for control of mineral resources. The DRC has accused Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels, who have seized control of large areas of the east. Rwanda denies the allegation.
