Brazil’s President Lula da Silva Visits Arab League Headquarters in Cairo

Brazil’s President Lula da Silva recently visited the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, where he was warmly welcomed by Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit. During his visit, Lula emphasized the historical and cultural ties that unite Brazil and the Arab world, expressing his pride in Brazil being the first Latin American country to receive observer status in the organization.

Lula highlighted the significant growth in trade between Brazil and Arab League countries, which increased from $5.4 billion in 2003 to $30 billion in 2023. During his visit, Lula also addressed the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. He criticized rich countries for cutting humanitarian aid to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees at a time when the Palestinian people need support the most. Lula called for an end to collective punishment and emphasized the importance of establishing a definitive ceasefire to allow for the delivery of sustainable and unimpeded humanitarian aid.

Lula’s government pledged to make a new contribution to UNRWA and urged all countries to maintain and strengthen their contributions. He emphasized that peace is the only possibility for building development and improving the lives of people. Lula expressed his persistence in continuing to fight for peace and called for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.

Secretary-General Aboul Gheit expressed his appreciation for Brazil’s continued support for the Palestinian cause in all international arenas. He also praised the strong ties between the Arab world and Brazil on all levels.

In addition to his meeting with Secretary-General Aboul Gheit, Lula also met with Kuwait’s permanent representative to the Arab League, Talal Al-Mutairi. They discussed international and regional issues of common concern, highlighting the importance of cooperation between Brazil and Kuwait.
