Brazil statue goes dark in support of Vinicius Jr’s racism claim.

Date:

In a show of solidarity against racism, Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue turned off its lights for an hour on Monday evening. The gesture was made in support of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr, who was subjected to racial slurs from Valencia fans during a match at the Mestalla Stadium in Spain over the weekend. The Archdiocesan Sanctuary, which manages the monument, cooperated with the Brazilian FA and the Observatory of Racial Discrimination in Football to turn off the lights. Vinicius Jr later tweeted his appreciation for the action, which had received over half a million likes within hours. The Brazilian government and football community united to condemn the racist acts, and Real Madrid filed a complaint with the Spanish State Attorney General’s Office.
