Silvio Berlusconi, the leader of Italy’s Forza Italia party, has been discharged from a Milan hospital after a 45-day stay for treatment of a lung infection related to chronic leukaemia. The 86-year-old former prime minister left the San Raffaele Hospital on Friday without making any comments, but was seen smiling and waving to reporters as he left in a dark limousine. Berlusconi was admitted on April 5 and spent the first week and a half in intensive care before being moved to a normal ward. Despite his health issues, Berlusconi still serves as a senator and president of his right-wing party, which is a junior partner in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s coalition government.
