1,500+ Climate Activists Arrested in Netherlands

Dutch police have reported that over 1,500 people were arrested during a demonstration by climate group Extinction Rebellion in The Hague. The activists blocked a section of a motorway in the city centre to protest against Dutch fossil fuel subsidies. Police used water cannon to disperse protesters blocking a major road and arrested a total of 1,579 people, with 40 facing prosecution on charges including vandalism. One activist reportedly bit a police officer during their arrest. Among the protesters were several Dutch celebrities, including Carice van Houten, who was arrested but later allowed to return home.
