Ukraine Reports Bloody Battles in Bakhmut

The eastern city of Bakhmut in Ukraine has been the site of “bloody battles unprecedented in recent decades” as Russia’s Wagner mercenary group attempts to capture the city, according to Ukraine’s military. The fight for Bakhmut has been the longest and deadliest battle of the war for both sides. The Russian defence ministry claimed on Saturday that Wagner had captured two more areas of the city. Meanwhile, the death toll from a Russian attack on residential buildings in nearby Sloviansk has risen to 11. Ukrainian officials said seven Russian missiles hit five buildings, including five homes and an administrative building. Ukraine’s air force has said it will soon have weapons with which to prevent attacks like the one on Friday, with the delivery of the Patriot air defence system promised by the US expected after Easter.
