The UAE’s mandatory midday break for outdoor workers will begin on June 15 and will continue until September 15. This is the 19th consecutive year that the ban has been enforced to protect employees from the intense summer heat. Workers are not allowed to work in open spaces or under direct sunlight from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., and daily working hours in both morning and evening shifts are restricted to eight hours. Employers who violate the regulations will be fined approximately $1,360 for each worker who is required to work during the midday break, with a maximum penalty of $13,614 if multiple workers are involved. The midday break is in line with Ministerial Resolution No. (44) of 2022 on Occupational Health and Safety and Labor Accommodation, which aims to provide adequate working environments that protect workers from occupational hazards and prevent work-related injuries or illnesses. There are exemptions to the midday break for jobs that require work to continue uninterrupted, such as laying asphalt or pouring concrete, as well as works needed to contain hazards or repair damage that affects the community. Employers are also required to provide sufficient cold drinking water and hydrating food for workers exempted from the midday ban.
