Turkish Teen Jailed for Adding Mustache to Erdogan Poster

A 16-year-old boy from the town of Mersin in southeastern Turkey has been arrested and jailed for drawing a moustache on an election campaign poster featuring President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The teenager was accused of defacing the poster with a pen, adding a “Hitler moustache” and writing insulting comments. He was identified by CCTV cameras and admitted to drawing the moustache but denied writing the comments. However, he was found guilty of “insulting the president” and sent to a youth facility. Last year, 16,753 people were convicted of “insulting the president” in Turkey, according to the justice ministry.
