Trump Faces Charges at Manhattan Court: Photos

Date:

Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has entered a plea of not guilty to 34 felony charges that were unsealed on Tuesday at the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York. These charges stem from a grand-jury investigation into a hush-money payment that Trump is accused of making to adult film star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election.

Trump is accused of falsifying business records in relation to that payment and several others, including to former Playboy model Karen McDougal. Both women allege they had an affair with the ex-president. Prosecutors wrote in the indictment that “the defendant Donald Trump repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 election.” They explained that the payments were part of a “catch and kill” scheme to suppress negative information during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump arrived at the court in his signature dark suit and red tie, in an eight-car motorcade escorted by Secret Service agents, waving to the crowds gathered outside the building. Once inside, he was fingerprinted and processed, but he avoided being handcuffed or having a mugshot taken. This was a remarkable moment for the ex-president, after years of investigations into his personal, business, and political dealings. It also made him the first US president ever to face criminal charges.

Trump was defiant in court and online, where he posted on his Truth Social platform that the proceedings were “SURREAL”, in all caps. He wrote, “Can’t believe this is happening in America,” signing off with the acronym for his slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

The charges against Trump are serious and could result in significant consequences if he is found guilty. The former president has been accused of violating campaign finance laws by making illegal payments to Daniels and McDougal. These payments were allegedly made to prevent negative information about Trump from being released during the 2016 election.

The indictment also accuses Trump of falsifying business records to cover up these payments. Prosecutors allege that he created fake invoices and other documents to make it appear as though the payments were for legitimate business expenses. If convicted, Trump could face up to 25 years in prison.

The charges against Trump are just the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the former president. He has been the subject of numerous investigations into his personal and business dealings, including a probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has accused his political opponents of engaging in a witch hunt against him. He has also been critical of the justice system and has accused prosecutors of being biased against him.

Despite these challenges, Trump remains a popular figure among his supporters. He continues to wield significant influence within the Republican Party and has been mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2024. However, the charges against him could complicate his political future and make it more difficult for him to mount a successful campaign.

The case against Trump is likely to be closely watched by legal experts and political observers alike. It could have significant implications for the future of American politics and the rule of law in the United States. Whatever the outcome, it is clear that this is a historic moment in US history and one that will be remembered for years to come.
